Living in AZ comes with the idea that the only way to lay on the beach in front of a huge body of salt water requires you to drive 6 hours to the California coast to swim in the icy Pacific Ocean. We have been and “NO THANKS”. California is not only expensive and heavily congested, the water is just too cold to enjoy. Many years ago, we discovered a warm beach with warm sea water and only three and a half hours drive from where we live. WHAT?!
The answer to our prayers was Puerto Penasco, Mexico, also known as Rocky Point! Before covid, we went down there 3-4 times a year for mini and long beach vacations. Now we get to go just 1-2 times per year due to how busy the kids are with sports. Rocky Point is so close! It’s two and a half hours to the border and 1 easy straight shot road passed that. It’s impossible to get lost and it’s a very safe and easy drive. Once you get down there, there are numerous beach front condos to choose from. Each have a few pools and hot tubs along with fantastic restaurants on site. You can drive 5-10 minutes into town for even more delicious restaurant options. Everything down there is much cheaper than in the states so we enjoy big seafood meals every night after a long day enjoying the warm sandy beach, sea, and pools.
Rocky Point holds a very special place in our hearts. We have stayed in almost all the resorts down there and have a few favorites. Our most recent trip was a whopping 10 days at the Sonoran Spa Resort. The 2 bedroom ocean front condo was very roomy with a full size kitchen, dining table, living room, and patio. The staff was friendly and the grounds and pools were kept well. We usually have breakfast in the room and then spend our mornings down at the beach. We have a packed picnic at lunchtime and then head up to the pool until late afternoon. Then we all head up to the condo for showers before heading into town to one of our favorite dining spots.
We are so fortunate to have a beautiful and relaxing beach getaway so close and within driving distance. We will never again head to expensive California for a beach vacation. Rocky Point has stolen our hearts forever!
