Camping is such a fun family activity and there are many ways to do it. You can camp in a tent out in the wilderness without any amenties beyond what you bring. You can also tent camp in a camping resort like a KOA where they offer campsites that usually have a water spicket, electricity, a picnic table to use as well as shared restroom/shower facilities. Then there is “glamping” which is camping in an RV you own or rent parked in sites like the ones mentioned as well. It is also considered “glamping” when you “camp” in a cabin in the wilderness. Additionally there are program camps as an option that usually have cabins and a theme for the camp. The camp will have different themed activities planned and meals made for you each day. Each of these camping options have their charm, pros, and cons. Choice of camping style is very personal and there is something for everyone depending on how outdoorsey someone is.
My oldest’s 5th grade field trip was at a program camp called Science Camp at the Tonto Rim Christian Camp in Payson, AZ. I was fortunate enough to get selected to chaperone the trip. We took nice coach buses 2 hours up to Payson and stayed for 2 nights. The camp had our days jam packed with activities and delicious meals. Every night we were completely exhausted. We got to do archery, find fossils, examine organisms in a local stream, dissect owl vomit for small animal bones, hike, play games, build things, identify animal tracks and noises, and learn survival skills to name a few. It was truly a wonderful experience and all the kids had a blast.
I love all types of camping! A program camp was really a new and special experience that made it shine above all other types of camping. Give one a try sometime! It’s fun to plan stuff on our own but it can equally fun if not more when everything is planned out for you. All there is to do is follow the schedule, explore, and have a blast!
