We love camps! There are camps of every different topic you can imagine! Camps provide extra enrichment for an otherwise bored or screen-attached child. I’m a huge proponent of keeping kids screen time to a minimum (an hour per school day and two hours per weekend days) and get them outside doing something new and fun. Those new and fun things can also be done indoors depending on your child’s personality.
My youngest boy always wants a sports camp. That’s just how he’s geared. Those are easiest to find. There are tons of city and private camp programs to choose from in all different sports. He joins the Mesa’s swim team in the summer as well as speed and agility camps. In the winter on the weekend’s he loves his baseball camp. Both of my boys used to go to martial arts camps for spring break and summers when they were in martial arts. They had a wonderful program and tons of fun active activities.
My oldest, is more into technology, building, and engineering so he has gone to Lego camps before and is interested in trying a coding camp. This past summer he wanted to try out the drama camp at our local Red Mountain High School. It was a two week summer camp led by the head of the high school drama club and assisted by high schoolers in the drama club. The kids all worked hard for two weeks and then performed a short version of Matilda the musical. My boy was one of the school children in the play and had the time of his life singing and dancing! He loved it so much we are signing him up again next year for the camp. When he is done with drama camp, he goes right into swim team with his brother.
The possibilities are endless. You just have to look for them. For me, it’s so fun to watch their personalities shape and shine when they find something they love to do. No child needs to be in front of a video game or TV all day. In fact it is hazardous to their health, body and mind, to do so. Get them up and out or just doing something else. You never know what you might out there. You may even find something you both love to do and then have the opportunity to connect on a new level and do it together. Best of luck!
